THE EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF HYDRATION STRATEGIES ON SPORTS PERFORMANCE

Abstract:
Proper hydration is crucial for optimizing sports performance and preventing dehydration-related complications during physical activity. This study aims to evaluate and compare the effects of different types of hydration strategies on sports performance. The study examines the impact of three hydration strategies: water-only hydration, electrolyte-based hydration, and carbohydrate-electrolyte hydration, on various performance variables including endurance, power, and cognitive function.

A comprehensive literature review was conducted to identify relevant studies published up until September 2021. The search included electronic databases, scientific journals, and relevant textbooks. Studies that met specific inclusion criteria were selected and analyzed for their methodological quality and findings.

The results indicate that different hydration strategies have varying effects on sports performance. Water-only hydration, while essential for preventing dehydration, may not adequately replace electrolytes lost through sweat during intense exercise. Electrolyte-based hydration, containing essential minerals such as sodium and potassium, can help maintain electrolyte balance and improve performance in activities lasting longer than one hour. Carbohydrate-electrolyte hydration, which includes additional carbohydrates, provides an additional fuel source to working muscles and enhances endurance performance, particularly in endurance-based events lasting more than 90 minutes.

Moreover, the impact of hydration strategies on cognitive function, such as attention, memory, and decision-making, has gained attention. Studies suggest that both dehydration and overhydration can negatively affect cognitive performance, highlighting the importance of maintaining proper fluid balance during exercise.

It is important to note that individual variability, environmental conditions, exercise intensity, and duration play significant roles in determining the optimal hydration strategy for an athlete. Athletes should tailor their hydration plans based on their specific needs, taking into account factors such as sweat rate, fluid losses, and personal preferences.

In conclusion, hydration strategies significantly impact sports performance. Athletes should consider factors such as electrolyte balance, carbohydrate supplementation, and cognitive function when selecting an appropriate hydration strategy. Further research is needed to explore the effects of hydration strategies on different sports disciplines, individual variability, and the influence of other factors such as temperature and humidity on hydration requirements to develop more precise guidelines for athletes and optimize their performance.
