THE EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF ANAEROBIC TRAINING ON SPORTS PERFORMANCE

Abstract:
Anaerobic training plays a crucial role in enhancing sports performance by targeting the physiological systems that contribute to high-intensity, explosive activities. This comprehensive review aims to examine the effects of different types of anaerobic training on sports performance, including resistance training, sprint interval training (SIT), and high-intensity interval training (HIIT).

Resistance training is a widely used anaerobic training method that focuses on muscular strength, power, and hypertrophy. It involves exercises such as weightlifting, plyometrics, and circuit training. Numerous studies have demonstrated that resistance training leads to significant improvements in muscular strength, power output, and muscle mass, which are essential for sports activities requiring explosive movements, such as sprinting, jumping, and throwing.

Sprint interval training (SIT) involves repeated bouts of high-intensity sprints with short recovery periods. It primarily targets the anaerobic energy system and enhances anaerobic power and capacity. SIT has been shown to improve sprint performance, maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max), and various physiological adaptations, such as increased muscle buffering capacity and improved neuromuscular function.

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) combines short, intense bursts of exercise with brief recovery periods. It encompasses a broader range of activities, including both aerobic and anaerobic components. HIIT has gained popularity in recent years due to its time efficiency and versatility. Studies have demonstrated that HIIT improves anaerobic performance, cardiorespiratory fitness, and metabolic adaptations. It also enhances the oxidative capacity of muscle fibers, leading to improved fatigue resistance.

Overall, different types of anaerobic training have significant positive effects on sports performance. Resistance training enhances muscular strength, power, and hypertrophy, while SIT and HIIT improve anaerobic power, capacity, and physiological adaptations. The choice of training method should be based on the specific demands of the sport, the athlete’s goals, and the training phase. Combining various anaerobic training methods in a periodized manner may provide additional benefits by targeting multiple energy systems and optimizing performance gains.

Further research is needed to investigate the long-term effects, optimal training protocols, and individual responses to different types of anaerobic training. Understanding the specific mechanisms underlying these adaptations will contribute to the development of more effective training programs tailored to individual athletes, ultimately enhancing sports performance.
