This abstract summarizes a comprehensive review of the literature to provide an overview of the effects of different types of stretching on injury prevention and sports performance.

The review examined various types of stretching, including static stretching, dynamic stretching, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretching, and ballistic stretching. Each stretching method was assessed in terms of its acute and chronic effects on injury prevention and sports performance outcomes, such as range of motion (ROM), muscle strength, power, and agility. Additionally, the potential mechanisms underlying the observed effects were explored.

The findings suggest that static stretching, characterized by holding a stretch for an extended duration, may temporarily decrease muscle strength and power, particularly when performed immediately before high-intensity activities. Conversely, dynamic stretching, involving controlled movements that mimic the actions of the sport, has been shown to improve dynamic flexibility, muscle activation, and performance in activities requiring explosive movements.

Ballistic stretching, characterized by rapid and bouncing movements, may increase flexibility but is associated with a higher risk of injury and is therefore not recommended for most individuals.

It emphasizes the need for tailored stretching programs that incorporate a combination of stretching techniques based on the specific goals and requirements of athletes.

In conclusion, the effects of different types of stretching on injury prevention and sports performance are multifaceted. Static stretching may have limited benefits before high-intensity activities, while dynamic stretching appears to be more advantageous for enhancing performance. PNF stretching shows promising acute effects, but further research is needed to determine its long-term benefits. Ballistic stretching should be approached with caution due to its increased risk of injury. Future studies should focus on optimizing stretching protocols based on individual needs and explore the underlying physiological mechanisms to enhance our understanding of the relationship between stretching and athletic performance.
