Abstract:

Autoimmune hematological disorders encompass a diverse group of conditions characterized by aberrant immune responses targeting blood cells and components of the hematopoietic system. These disorders result from a breakdown in immune tolerance, leading to the production of autoantibodies or autoreactive T-cells that recognize and attack self-antigens within the hematopoietic system.

This abstract aims to provide a concise overview of the hematopathological features commonly observed in autoimmune hematological disorders, including autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA), immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), and autoimmune neutropenia (AIN).

AIHA is characterized by the destruction of red blood cells due to autoantibodies, resulting in anemia. Hematopathological examination reveals the presence of spherocytes, hemolysis, and erythrophagocytosis in the spleen and liver. Immunohistochemistry may demonstrate the deposition of immunoglobulins and complement components on red blood cell surfaces.

ITP is characterized by immune-mediated destruction of platelets, leading to thrombocytopenia. Bone marrow examination often reveals an increased number of megakaryocytes, reflecting compensatory thrombopoiesis. Additionally, peripheral blood smears may show decreased platelet counts and the presence of large platelets.
