Abstract:

Anemia is a common hematological disorder characterized by a decrease in the concentration of red blood cells (RBCs) or hemoglobin in the blood. Accurate diagnosis and classification of anemia are crucial for appropriate management and treatment. Hematological parameters play a vital role in diagnosing anemia by providing valuable information about the underlying cause, severity, and response to treatment. This abstract aims to summarize the role of key hematological parameters in the diagnosis of anemia.

Hemoglobin (Hb) level is one of the primary parameters used to diagnose anemia. It reflects the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood and is measured through various methods, such as complete blood count (CBC) or point-of-care testing. Reduced Hb levels below the established reference range are indicative of anemia, but the specific cutoff values may vary based on age, sex, and altitude.

Mean corpuscular volume (MCV) is another critical parameter used in the classification of anemia. It represents the average volume of individual RBCs and helps differentiate between different types of anemia. Microcytic anemia is characterized by a low MCV, often seen in iron deficiency anemia and thalassemia, while macrocytic anemia exhibits an elevated MCV, commonly associated with vitamin B12 deficiency and folate deficiency anemia.

Red cell distribution width (RDW) is a measure of the variation in RBC size. Increased RDW values suggest the presence of mixed populations of RBCs, indicating the possibility of underlying nutritional deficiencies or bone marrow disorders. RDW is especially useful when differentiating between iron deficiency anemia and thalassemia, as it is often elevated in the latter.
