Abstract:

Thyroid disorders are a group of medical conditions characterized by dysfunction of the thyroid gland, leading to alterations in the production and regulation of thyroid hormones. The chemical pathology of thyroid disorders involves the examination of various biochemical parameters and molecular markers associated with thyroid function, which play a crucial role in diagnosis, management, and monitoring of these conditions.

The thyroid gland produces two key hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), which regulate numerous physiological processes in the body, including metabolism, growth, and development. Thyroid disorders can be broadly classified into two categories: hypothyroidism, characterized by insufficient thyroid hormone production, and hyperthyroidism, characterized by excessive thyroid hormone production.

In hypothyroidism, chemical pathology investigations reveal decreased serum levels of T4 and T3, along with elevated levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). Additional biochemical parameters, such as cholesterol, creatinine kinase, and liver function tests, may also be altered due to the systemic effects of hypothyroidism.
