Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly disrupted the education sector worldwide, compelling educational institutions to adapt to new learning environments and teaching methodologies. This study aims to evaluate the learning environment and the role performance of secondary school teachers in Imo State, Nigeria, during the COVID-19 pandemic era.

The study employed a mixed-methods research design, combining both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Data were collected through surveys and interviews conducted among secondary school teachers in Imo State. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while the qualitative data were analyzed thematically.

The findings of the study revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic had a profound impact on the learning environment in Imo State secondary schools. Many schools shifted to remote learning modalities, such as online classes, radio and television broadcasts, and take-home assignments. However, the transition to these alternative modes of instruction posed several challenges, including limited access to technology, lack of reliable internet connectivity, and inadequate training for teachers in utilizing digital platforms effectively. Consequently, the learning experience for students was compromised, leading to concerns about the overall academic performance and educational outcomes.

Regarding the role performance of secondary school teachers, the study identified both positive and negative aspects. Despite the challenges, many teachers demonstrated resilience and creativity in adapting to the new teaching methods. They utilized various strategies to engage students, including online discussions, multimedia resources, and interactive platforms. However, several teachers faced difficulties in navigating the digital learning environment and struggled to maintain effective communication and student interaction.

The study highlights the need for comprehensive interventions to improve the learning environment and support the role performance of secondary school teachers in Imo State during the pandemic era. These interventions should focus on enhancing teachers' digital literacy skills, providing access to necessary technological resources, and fostering collaboration and professional development opportunities. Additionally, policymakers should address the infrastructural gaps and ensure equitable access to quality education for all students.

Overall, this study contributes to the understanding of the challenges faced by secondary school teachers in Imo State during the COVID-19 pandemic and provides insights for policymakers and educational stakeholders to develop effective strategies for mitigating the negative impacts and improving the learning environment for students.
