Abstract:
This study investigates the influence of gender and locality on the tendency to indulge in criminal behavior among youths in Anambra State, Nigeria. The aim is to understand the factors that contribute to criminal behavior and to provide insights for the development of effective intervention strategies.

The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. The sample consists of youths aged 18 to 30 years, selected from urban and rural areas of Anambra State. The participants' gender, locality, and criminal tendencies are assessed using standardized measures and self-reporting techniques.

Preliminary findings suggest that both gender and locality significantly influence the tendency to engage in criminal behavior among youths in Anambra State. Gender differences indicate that males tend to exhibit higher levels of criminal behavior compared to females. This finding aligns with existing criminological theories that emphasize the male propensity for aggression and risk-taking behaviors.

Regarding locality, the study reveals that youths from urban areas demonstrate a higher inclination towards criminal behavior compared to their rural counterparts. This difference may be attributed to various factors such as socioeconomic disparities, peer influence, and exposure to urban deviant subcultures.

Qualitative interviews provide additional insights into the underlying mechanisms contributing to gender and locality differences in criminal tendencies. Factors such as family background, educational opportunities, community support systems, and access to resources emerge as influential variables that shape the behavior of youths.

The implications of these findings highlight the need for targeted interventions tailored to specific gender and locality contexts. Effective prevention and intervention strategies should address the unique challenges faced by male and female youths, as well as the distinctive dynamics present in urban and rural settings.

By understanding the influence of gender and locality on criminal behavior among youths in Anambra State, policymakers, law enforcement agencies, and community organizations can develop evidence-based programs that promote social inclusion, education, and positive youth development. Ultimately, this research aims to contribute to the reduction of criminal behavior and enhance the overall well-being of youths in Anambra State and similar contexts.
