Abstract:
This study aims to investigate the relationship between social networking sites (SNS) and depression tendencies among in-school adolescents in Benue State in the post-COVID-19 era. The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the lives of individuals globally, including adolescents who have experienced disruptions in their education, social interactions, and daily routines. Consequently, many adolescents have turned to social networking sites as a means of maintaining connections and seeking social support.
The study will adopt a quantitative research design and utilize a survey questionnaire to collect data from a sample of in-school adolescents in Benue State. The questionnaire will include standardized scales to measure the participants' SNS usage patterns, depressive symptoms, and other relevant variables. Data analysis will involve descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to explore the relationship between SNS usage and depression tendencies.
The study expects to find a significant correlation between the extent of SNS usage and depression tendencies among in-school adolescents. It is hypothesized that excessive use of SNS, such as spending excessive time on social media platforms, experiencing cyberbullying, and comparing oneself to others, may contribute to increased depressive symptoms. Additionally, factors such as social support, offline social interactions, and coping mechanisms will be examined as potential moderators or mediators of this relationship.
The findings of this research will provide valuable insights into the impact of SNS usage on the mental health of in-school adolescents in the post-COVID-19 context. The study's results will help inform educators, parents, and mental health professionals about the potential risks associated with excessive SNS usage and guide the development of appropriate interventions and strategies to promote healthy social media habits among adolescents. Ultimately, the research aims to contribute to the overall well-being and mental health of in-school adolescents in Benue State, Nigeria.
