Abstract:

This study aims to examine the relationship between social relationships and manifest anxiety among freshmen in tertiary institutions in Lagos State. Transitioning to a new academic environment can be challenging, and social relationships play a crucial role in the well-being and adjustment of individuals, particularly during the early stages of their college experience. Manifest anxiety, characterized by excessive worry, fear, and nervousness, can significantly impact an individual's academic performance, mental health, and overall quality of life.

The study adopts a quantitative research design and utilizes a survey questionnaire to collect data from a sample of freshmen students enrolled in tertiary institutions located in Lagos State, Nigeria. The questionnaire includes validated scales to measure social relationships and manifest anxiety. Demographic information and data related to the participants' social interactions, support networks, and anxiety symptoms are also collected.

Data analysis will involve descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to examine the relationship between social relationships and manifest anxiety. The findings will provide insights into the social dynamics and anxiety levels among freshmen in Lagos State's tertiary institutions.

The study's significance lies in its potential to contribute to the existing literature on social relationships, anxiety, and academic adjustment among college freshmen. By understanding the relationship between these factors, educational institutions can develop targeted interventions and support systems to enhance students' social integration and alleviate anxiety symptoms. Moreover, the findings can inform policymakers and educational stakeholders about the importance of creating conducive social environments within tertiary institutions to promote students' overall well-being and academic success.
