Abstract:
This study explores the perception of undergraduate students at the University of Calabar, Nigeria, regarding the sexuality of women with disabilities (WWD). It aims to examine the attitudes, beliefs, and stereotypes held by these students towards the sexual lives of WWD, and to identify factors that may influence their perceptions. The research adopts a qualitative approach, employing semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions with undergraduate students from various faculties.
The findings reveal a range of perceptions and attitudes towards the sexuality of WWD among the participants. While some students exhibited inclusive and positive attitudes, recognizing that WWD have the right to engage in sexual relationships and experience pleasure, others demonstrated negative stereotypes and misconceptions. Negative perceptions often revolved around societal misconceptions, cultural beliefs, and lack of knowledge about disability and sexuality.
Participants' perceptions were influenced by various factors, including cultural norms, religious beliefs, socialization, and exposure to disability issues. Lack of education and awareness about disability and sexuality emerged as significant barriers to understanding and accepting the sexuality of WWD. Additionally, societal stigma and discrimination towards individuals with disabilities were found to contribute to the negative perceptions held by some students.
The study highlights the need for comprehensive sex education and disability awareness programs within Nigerian universities to address the gaps in knowledge and promote inclusive attitudes towards the sexuality of WWD. Efforts should be made to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions, foster empathy and understanding, and encourage open dialogues on the topic. University institutions should also prioritize the inclusion of disability perspectives in their curriculum and create a supportive and inclusive environment for students with disabilities.
By shedding light on the perceptions of undergraduate students towards the sexuality of WWD, this study contributes to the existing body of knowledge on disability and sexuality in Nigeria. The findings can inform the development of targeted interventions and policies aimed at promoting sexual rights, inclusivity, and empowerment for WWD in higher education institutions and society at large.
