Abstract:
The prevalence of stress among university undergraduates has become a growing concern in Lagos, Nigeria. This study aims to investigate the effects of stress inoculation, physical relaxation, and skills acquisition training on managing stress among university undergraduates in Lagos. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews.
The sample consisted of 200 undergraduate students from different universities in Lagos, selected through a systematic random sampling technique. The participants were divided into four groups: stress inoculation training (SIT), physical relaxation training (PRT), skills acquisition training (SAT), and a control group. Each group underwent a specific intervention program over a period of eight weeks.
Quantitative data were collected using standardized self-report measures, including the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and the Coping Strategies Questionnaire (CSQ). Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews to gain a deeper understanding of the participants' experiences and perceptions regarding stress management.
The results indicated that all three intervention groups (SIT, PRT, and SAT) showed significant reductions in perceived stress levels compared to the control group. Additionally, participants in the SIT group reported an increase in adaptive coping strategies, such as problem-solving and positive reframing. The PRT group reported improvements in physical relaxation techniques and the SAT group demonstrated enhanced skills in time management, organization, and communication.
Qualitative findings provided insights into the subjective experiences of participants, highlighting the perceived benefits of each intervention. Participants expressed improved emotional well-being, increased self-awareness, and enhanced ability to manage stressors effectively.
The findings suggest that stress inoculation, physical relaxation, and skills acquisition training are effective interventions for managing stress among university undergraduates in Lagos, Nigeria. These interventions provide valuable tools and strategies for students to cope with academic, personal, and environmental stressors. The study emphasizes the importance of implementing comprehensive stress management programs within university settings to support the well-being and academic success of students.
