Abstract:
This study aims to explore the psychological effects of rape on the academic performance of pupils, drawing on empirical evidence from reports published in Nigerian dailies. Rape is a pervasive and traumatic form of violence that affects individuals across various domains of their lives, including education. However, limited research has focused specifically on the impact of rape on the academic performance of pupils in Nigeria.

To address this research gap, a systematic analysis of Nigerian newspaper articles reporting cases of rape and its aftermath was conducted. The articles were sourced from a variety of reputable Nigerian dailies, covering a period of five years from 2019 to 2023. The analysis involved examining the narratives and experiences shared by victims, survivors, and their families, as well as the reported consequences on the academic performance of pupils.

The findings of this study highlight the profound psychological effects of rape on pupils' academic performance. The analysis revealed that victims of rape often experience a range of negative emotions, including fear, shame, guilt, and low self-esteem, which significantly impact their ability to concentrate, learn, and engage actively in their academic pursuits. The trauma associated with rape can lead to symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, and other psychological disorders, further exacerbating the challenges faced by pupils in their educational journey.

Moreover, societal stigma, victim-blaming attitudes, and inadequate support systems were identified as additional factors hindering the academic progress of pupils who have experienced rape. The study underscores the urgent need for comprehensive and targeted interventions to address the psychological well-being of rape survivors in the Nigerian educational system. These interventions should include accessible counseling services, educational awareness programs, and policy reforms aimed at fostering a safe and supportive learning environment for survivors.

Overall, this empirical investigation sheds light on the detrimental impact of rape on the academic performance of pupils in Nigeria. By raising awareness and understanding of the psychological effects of rape, this study contributes to the ongoing discourse surrounding the importance of addressing the needs of rape survivors within the educational context. It is hoped that this research will inform policymakers, educators, and stakeholders in designing effective strategies to support the healing and educational reintegration of pupils affected by rape.
