Abstract:
This study aims to investigate the effects of Acceptance-Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Social Skills Training (SST) on anxiety levels among adolescent students from father-absent families in Lagos State. The absence of a father figure during childhood has been associated with various psychological challenges, including increased anxiety levels. Therefore, this research seeks to explore the potential benefits of ACT and SST interventions in reducing anxiety and enhancing the psychological well-being of adolescents in this specific demographic.

The study will employ a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test/post-test control group. Participants will be recruited from schools in Lagos State, comprising of adolescents aged 13 to 18 years from father-absent families. The sample will be randomly assigned to three groups: ACT intervention group, SST intervention group, and a control group. The ACT intervention will focus on promoting psychological flexibility and acceptance of distressing thoughts and emotions, while the SST intervention will aim to enhance social skills, communication, and relationship building.

Anxiety levels will be assessed using standardized self-report measures before and after the interventions. Additional demographic information, such as age, gender, and duration of father absence, will also be collected. Data analysis will involve inferential statistics, including ANOVA and regression analysis, to compare the pre- and post-intervention anxiety levels among the three groups.

It is hypothesized that both ACT and SST interventions will lead to a significant reduction in anxiety levels compared to the control group. Furthermore, it is anticipated that the ACT intervention will yield greater improvements in psychological well-being due to its emphasis on acceptance and emotional regulation, while the SST intervention will primarily enhance social skills and interpersonal relationships.

The findings of this study will contribute to the existing literature on interventions targeting anxiety in adolescents from father-absent families. Moreover, the results will provide valuable insights for mental health professionals, educators, and policy-makers in Lagos State to develop effective interventions and support systems that address the unique needs of this vulnerable population.
