Abstract:
This abstract provides a concise overview of a study conducted to explore parental attitudes towards the academic development of children with hearing impairment in Oyo State, Nigeria. The study aimed to shed light on the perceptions, beliefs, and behaviors of parents in relation to their children's education, with a focus on the unique challenges faced by children with hearing impairment.

The research adopted a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather comprehensive data. A sample of parents with at least one child diagnosed with hearing impairment was recruited from schools and special education centers in Oyo State. The study assessed various factors including parental expectations, involvement in their child's education, communication strategies, and access to educational resources.

Preliminary findings indicate that parental attitudes towards the academics of children with hearing impairment in Oyo State are influenced by multiple factors. Positive attitudes were observed among parents who demonstrated high levels of involvement in their child's education, had realistic expectations, and utilized effective communication strategies. These parents actively sought educational resources and support systems to enhance their child's learning experience.

Conversely, some parents exhibited negative attitudes, which were often associated with limited knowledge about hearing impairment, societal stigmatization, and a lack of awareness about available support services. These attitudes were found to have a detrimental impact on the academic success and overall well-being of children with hearing impairment.

The study highlights the importance of parental attitudes in shaping the academic outcomes of children with hearing impairment. It underscores the need for targeted interventions, including educational programs, counseling services, and community awareness campaigns, to support parents and enhance their understanding of hearing impairment and its implications for academic achievement.

The findings of this research have implications for policymakers, educators, and professionals in the field of special education in Oyo State, Nigeria. By addressing parental attitudes and providing appropriate support systems, stakeholders can work towards creating an inclusive and supportive educational environment for children with hearing impairment, thereby promoting their academic success and overall well-being.
