Abstract:
This study investigates the predictive role of self-esteem and peer influence on romantic relationship quality among young adults affiliated with the Methodist Church Nigeria. Romantic relationship quality is a crucial aspect of individuals' psychological well-being, and understanding the factors that influence it can contribute to the development of effective interventions and relationship-enhancement programs.
The study adopts a quantitative research design, utilizing self-administered questionnaires to collect data from a sample of young adults (aged 18-30) who identify themselves as members of the Methodist Church Nigeria and are currently engaged in a romantic relationship. The measures used in this study include the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Peer Influence Scale, and the Relationship Assessment Scale.
The data collected will be analyzed using multiple regression analysis to examine the predictive effect of self-esteem and peer influence on romantic relationship quality. Additionally, demographic variables such as age, gender, and relationship duration will be considered as potential control variables.
It is hypothesized that higher levels of self-esteem will be positively associated with better romantic relationship quality, whereas greater peer influence will have a negative impact on relationship quality. Moreover, it is expected that self-esteem and peer influence will interact, whereby the relationship between peer influence and relationship quality will be stronger among individuals with lower self-esteem.
The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the existing body of literature on romantic relationships, self-esteem, and peer influence. The results may have implications for relationship counseling and intervention programs within the Methodist Church Nigeria, providing insights into the factors that influence relationship quality among young adults. By understanding the role of self-esteem and peer influence, practitioners and clergy members can design targeted interventions to promote healthy and satisfying romantic relationships among young adults in the Methodist Church Nigeria.
