Abstract:

The rapid advancement of information and communication technology (ICT) has revolutionized various sectors of society, including education. In the context of adult education, ICT plays a crucial role in enhancing employees' skills and competencies, particularly in regions like Lagos State, Nigeria, where a large workforce is present. This study aims to explore the significance of ICT as a sin-qua-non (indispensable factor) in promoting employees' skills and competencies in Lagos State.

The study utilizes a mixed-methods research design, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The quantitative phase involves surveying a representative sample of employees from different sectors and industries in Lagos State to collect data on their access to and utilization of ICT tools for educational purposes. The qualitative phase comprises in-depth interviews with adult education experts, employers, and employees to gain a deeper understanding of the impact of ICT on skills development.

The findings reveal that ICT has become a sin-qua-non for promoting employees' skills and competencies in Lagos State. The majority of employees have access to ICT tools such as computers, smartphones, and the internet, which they utilize for educational purposes. The use of ICT in adult education has facilitated flexible learning opportunities, allowing employees to acquire new skills and knowledge at their convenience. Online courses, training modules, and virtual classrooms have emerged as effective platforms for skills development, enabling employees to enhance their professional competencies.

Furthermore, ICT has played a pivotal role in bridging the gap between formal education and workplace learning. Through virtual collaboration tools and e-learning platforms, employees can engage in interactive learning experiences, share knowledge, and collaborate with experts and peers from diverse backgrounds. This has resulted in improved problem-solving abilities, critical thinking skills, and adaptability among employees, enabling them to meet the evolving demands of the labor market.

The study concludes that ICT has transformed adult education in Lagos State, Nigeria, into a dynamic and inclusive learning environment. It has become an indispensable tool for promoting employees' skills and competencies, fostering lifelong learning, and ultimately contributing to their employability and career advancement. However, challenges related to access, connectivity, digital literacy, and infrastructure remain, requiring concerted efforts from policymakers, employers, and educational institutions to ensure equitable access to ICT resources and maximize its potential in adult education.
