Abstract:
This abstract provides a concise overview of a study conducted to investigate stress sources and coping strategies among secondary school students in Maiduguri, Borno State. The study aimed to identify the primary stressors experienced by students and explore the coping mechanisms they employed to manage stress.

The research utilized a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. A sample of secondary school students from various schools in Maiduguri, Borno State, was selected using a stratified random sampling technique. The participants completed self-report questionnaires and engaged in semi-structured interviews. The data collected were analyzed using both descriptive and thematic analysis techniques.

The findings revealed several significant stress sources among secondary school students in Maiduguri. These stressors included academic pressure, peer relationships, family issues, socio-political instability, and insecurity. Academic pressure emerged as one of the most prominent stressors, with students experiencing high expectations, excessive workload, and fear of failure.

Regarding coping strategies, the study identified various adaptive and maladaptive mechanisms employed by the students. Adaptive coping strategies included seeking social support, engaging in physical exercise, time management, and relaxation techniques. On the other hand, maladaptive coping strategies included substance abuse, withdrawal, and aggressive behavior.

The study emphasizes the need for schools and other relevant stakeholders to recognize and address the stressors faced by secondary school students in Maiduguri. Implementing interventions such as stress management programs, counseling services, and extracurricular activities could help students develop effective coping mechanisms and enhance their overall well-being.

The findings of this study contribute to the existing body of knowledge on stress among secondary school students in a challenging socio-political context.
