Abstract:
This study investigates the influence of two assessment techniques, namely traditional assessment and alternative assessment, on the attitude towards and achievement in Economics among adolescents in Ilorin South Local Government Area of Kwara State. The study aims to provide insights into the effects of different assessment methods on students' attitudes and academic performance in Economics.
The research employs a quantitative research design, specifically a quasi-experimental approach. A sample of 200 secondary school students from various schools in the Ilorin South Local Government Area is selected using a stratified random sampling technique. The participants are randomly assigned to two groups: the traditional assessment group and the alternative assessment group.
Data is collected using a pre-designed questionnaire to measure students' attitudes towards Economics and academic achievement in the subject. The questionnaire consists of Likert-scale items and open-ended questions. Additionally, students' scores on Economics examinations are collected as a measure of academic achievement.
The study's findings reveal that the assessment technique significantly influences students' attitudes towards Economics. The alternative assessment group demonstrates a more positive attitude towards Economics compared to the traditional assessment group. Moreover, the alternative assessment group also shows higher academic achievement in Economics compared to the traditional assessment group.
The results suggest that alternative assessment techniques, such as project-based assessments, presentations, and portfolios, positively impact students' attitudes towards Economics and enhance their academic achievement in the subject. These findings have implications for educational policymakers, curriculum developers, and teachers in designing effective assessment strategies to improve students' attitudes and achievement in Economics.
Based on the research findings, it is recommended that educators and policymakers consider incorporating alternative assessment techniques alongside traditional assessment methods to foster a positive attitude towards Economics and enhance academic achievement among adolescents in Kwara State. Further research is encouraged to explore the long-term effects of alternative assessment techniques on students' attitudes and academic performance in other subjects and educational contexts.
