Abstract:
This study aims to examine the impact of girl-child early marriage on the level of divorce among some Northerners in Kano State, Nigeria. Early marriage, particularly involving girls below the age of 18, remains a prevalent practice in many regions of Northern Nigeria, including Kano State. This research seeks to explore the relationship between girl-child early marriage and divorce rates, shedding light on the consequences of this social phenomenon.
The study utilizes a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative analysis and qualitative interviews. Quantitative data will be collected through surveys administered to a representative sample of married individuals in Kano State. Variables such as age at marriage, duration of marriage, educational attainment, socioeconomic status, and divorce status will be considered in the analysis. Statistical tests, including regression analysis, will be employed to determine the correlation between girl-child early marriage and divorce rates.
Additionally, qualitative data will be collected through in-depth interviews with key stakeholders, including divorced women, community leaders, religious leaders, and policymakers. These interviews will provide insights into the socio-cultural factors, perceptions, and experiences surrounding girl-child early marriage and divorce in Kano State.
The study hypothesizes that girl-child early marriage has a significant impact on the level of divorce among some Northerners in Kano State. It is anticipated that factors such as limited educational opportunities, increased vulnerability to domestic violence, and lack of autonomy contribute to higher divorce rates among women who were married at a young age.
The findings of this research will contribute to the existing body of literature on girl-child early marriage and its consequences. The study's results will inform policymakers, community leaders, and relevant stakeholders about the urgent need for interventions to address this issue. By highlighting the impact of girl-child early marriage on divorce rates, this research aims to advocate for policies and programs that promote the rights, well-being, and empowerment of girls in Kano State, Nigeria.
