Abstract:
Road safety is a critical concern worldwide, particularly in developing countries where road traffic accidents continue to claim numerous lives and cause significant economic losses. Commercial drivers, who operate public transportation vehicles, play a crucial role in ensuring road safety for themselves and their passengers. This study aims to assess the impact of road safety education on commercial drivers' knowledge and behavior towards road traffic codes and safe driving in Delta State, Nigeria.

The study employed a quantitative research design, utilizing a pre- and post-intervention survey to measure the effectiveness of road safety education. A sample of commercial drivers was selected using a multi-stage sampling technique, and data were collected through structured questionnaires. The intervention consisted of a comprehensive road safety education program that covered topics such as traffic rules and regulations, defensive driving techniques, and the importance of adhering to road safety practices.

The findings revealed that prior to the intervention, commercial drivers' knowledge of road traffic codes and safe driving practices was inadequate. However, after participating in the road safety education program, there was a significant improvement in their knowledge levels. The drivers demonstrated enhanced understanding of traffic rules, signage, and safe driving techniques.

Moreover, the study found that road safety education positively influenced the behavior of commercial drivers. They exhibited improved compliance with traffic regulations, including the use of seat belts, adherence to speed limits, and avoiding drunk driving. Furthermore, the drivers showed increased vigilance and awareness of pedestrian safety, thereby reducing the risk of accidents.

The study highlights the importance of road safety education in enhancing commercial drivers' knowledge and influencing their behavior towards road traffic codes and safe driving practices. These findings suggest that implementing comprehensive road safety education programs can contribute to the reduction of road traffic accidents and promote a safer road environment in Delta State.

The implications of this research suggest the need for continued investment in road safety education initiatives targeted at commercial drivers. Additionally, policymakers and transportation authorities should collaborate with relevant stakeholders to develop and enforce stringent regulations, ensuring the integration of road safety education into commercial driver training programs. By doing so, Delta State can work towards improving road safety, reducing accident rates, and protecting the lives of its citizens.
