Abstract:
Rising world food prices have become a global concern due to their potential consequences on food security and nutrition. This abstract presents a study conducted in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, Nigeria, to examine the effects of soaring world food prices on under-five malnutrition in the local community.

The study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data analysis and qualitative interviews. Quantitative data were obtained through a cross-sectional survey conducted among caregivers of children under five years old in Ijebu-Ode. The survey collected information on household food security, dietary patterns, and the nutritional status of children. The World Health Organization's (WHO) Child Growth Standards were used to determine the nutritional status, specifically focusing on indicators such as stunting, wasting, and underweight.

The qualitative component involved in-depth interviews with key informants, including community leaders, healthcare workers, and policymakers. These interviews aimed to explore the perceptions, experiences, and coping strategies adopted by the community in response to soaring food prices and their impact on child nutrition.

Preliminary findings indicate a strong association between soaring world food prices and under-five malnutrition in Ijebu-Ode. The quantitative analysis revealed that households experiencing food insecurity were more likely to have children with poor nutritional status. Additionally, there was a significant decrease in dietary diversity due to limited access to nutritious foods, as the prices of essential food items surged.

Qualitative interviews shed light on the coping strategies employed by caregivers, such as reducing meal portions, substituting nutrient-rich foods with cheaper alternatives, and relying on social support networks. However, these strategies were often inadequate, resulting in compromised child nutrition.

The study findings underscore the urgent need for interventions to address the consequences of soaring world food prices on under-five malnutrition in Ijebu-Ode. Policy recommendations include improving local agricultural productivity, enhancing food storage and distribution systems, and implementing social safety nets to provide vulnerable households with access to affordable and nutritious food.

In conclusion, this study highlights the detrimental impact of soaring world food prices on under-five malnutrition in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, Nigeria. The findings emphasize the urgency of implementing targeted interventions and policies to mitigate the adverse effects and promote child nutrition in the face of global food price fluctuations.
