Abstract:
This study investigates the pre-retirement vocational entrepreneurship skills development needs of university administrative employees in Southwest Nigeria. With the increasing challenges associated with post-retirement financial security, the acquisition of entrepreneurial skills has become critical for individuals transitioning from formal employment to entrepreneurship. However, limited research has focused specifically on the vocational entrepreneurship skills development needs of administrative employees within the university setting in Nigeria.

The study employs a qualitative research design, utilizing semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions to gather data from a sample of university administrative employees in Southwest Nigeria. The participants are selected using purposive sampling, ensuring representation from different administrative departments and varying levels of experience.

The findings reveal several key areas of vocational entrepreneurship skills development needs among university administrative employees. These include business management and planning, financial literacy, marketing and sales, networking and relationship building, technology adoption, and adaptability to changing market dynamics. Participants expressed a strong desire for targeted training programs and workshops to enhance their entrepreneurial competencies in these areas, as well as access to mentoring and support networks.

The study underscores the importance of universities and relevant stakeholders in recognizing and addressing the unique vocational entrepreneurship skills development needs of administrative employees approaching retirement. It recommends the development and implementation of tailored training programs and initiatives to equip these employees with the necessary skills and knowledge to successfully transition into entrepreneurship. Such initiatives can contribute to enhancing post-retirement financial security and fostering entrepreneurial activities in the region.

The findings of this study have implications for policymakers, university administrators, and human resource practitioners. By understanding and addressing the vocational entrepreneurship skills development needs of university administrative employees in Southwest Nigeria, stakeholders can promote sustainable entrepreneurship and contribute to the overall economic development of the region. Future research should explore the effectiveness of specific training interventions and evaluate the long-term impact of vocational entrepreneurship skills development programs on post-retirement entrepreneurial activities and financial well-being.
