Abstract:
Food insecurity and psychosocial health challenges can significantly impact students' academic performance in higher education institutions. This study aims to explore the effects of food insecurity and psychosocial health challenges on students' academic performance in the Federal College of Education, Zaria, Nigeria.
The research utilizes a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather data from a representative sample of students in the college. The quantitative survey will assess the prevalence of food insecurity among students, measure psychosocial health challenges, and collect academic performance indicators such as grade point averages (GPAs).
Additionally, qualitative interviews will be conducted with a subset of participants to obtain in-depth insights into the experiences and perceptions of students facing food insecurity and psychosocial health challenges. The interviews will explore the specific impacts of these challenges on academic performance and identify coping mechanisms adopted by students.
The study expects to find that food insecurity and psychosocial health challenges have a negative influence on students' academic performance. It is hypothesized that students experiencing food insecurity may struggle with concentration, memory, and cognitive abilities due to inadequate nutrition. Psychosocial health challenges, such as stress, anxiety, and depression, can further exacerbate these difficulties and hinder academic success.
The findings from this study will contribute to the existing body of knowledge on the impact of food insecurity and psychosocial health challenges on students' academic performance in higher education institutions. The results may inform the development of targeted interventions and support systems to mitigate the adverse effects of food insecurity and psychosocial health challenges on students' educational outcomes.
