Abstract:
The integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) into education has gained significant attention in recent years. This study explores the attitude of teachers towards ICT integration and its utilization in the teaching of Social Studies in upper basic schools in Ile-Ife, Nigeria. The objective of this research is to investigate the factors influencing teachers' attitudes towards ICT integration and to examine the extent of ICT utilization in the teaching of Social Studies.

A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. The study sample consisted of teachers from upper basic schools in Ile-Ife, selected through stratified random sampling. The research instrument used was a structured questionnaire, which was administered to the participants. Additionally, semi-structured interviews were conducted with a subset of the teachers to gain deeper insights into their experiences and perceptions.

The findings indicate that teachers in Ile-Ife upper basic schools generally possess a positive attitude towards ICT integration in the teaching of Social Studies. However, several factors were identified that influenced teachers' attitudes, including their level of ICT skills, availability of ICT infrastructure and resources, training opportunities, and administrative support. Despite the positive attitude, the study revealed that the actual utilization of ICT in the teaching of Social Studies was relatively low. Barriers such as lack of access to ICT resources, inadequate training, and limited time were identified as hindrances to effective ICT integration.

Based on the research findings, it is recommended that efforts be made to improve teachers' ICT skills through targeted training programs. Schools should also invest in ICT infrastructure and provide teachers with adequate resources to facilitate the integration of ICT into Social Studies instruction. Additionally, policymakers and school administrators should develop supportive policies and allocate sufficient time for teachers to plan and implement ICT-based activities in their classrooms.

This study contributes to the growing body of literature on ICT integration in education, specifically within the context of Social Studies instruction. It provides valuable insights into teachers' attitudes and the challenges they face in utilizing ICT effectively. Ultimately, the findings aim to inform educational stakeholders and policymakers in Ile-Ife, Nigeria, on strategies for promoting the successful integration of ICT in the teaching and learning process, leading to improved educational outcomes in Social Studies.
