Abstract:
This abstract provides a summary of a study conducted to investigate the availability and utilization of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in managing examination misconduct in public universities in South-East Nigeria. The study aimed to assess the extent to which ICT tools and systems are employed by these institutions to prevent and address examination malpractice.
The research employed a mixed-methods approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. The study sample consisted of administrators, faculty members, and students from selected public universities in the South-East region of Nigeria. Data were collected through surveys, interviews, and document analysis.
The findings revealed that ICT infrastructure and resources in the examined universities were generally available, but their utilization for managing examination misconduct was limited. While most institutions had computer laboratories, internet connectivity, and learning management systems, these resources were primarily used for academic purposes rather than specifically addressing examination malpractice.
The study identified various challenges that hindered the effective utilization of ICT in managing examination misconduct. These challenges included inadequate training on ICT tools, limited awareness of available technologies, lack of clear policies and guidelines, and insufficient institutional support and funding.
Furthermore, the study highlighted the potential benefits of leveraging ICT in managing examination misconduct. These benefits encompassed the ability to enhance examination security, automate monitoring processes, facilitate data analysis for detecting irregularities, and enable timely interventions to prevent malpractice.
Based on the findings, the study recommended several measures to improve the availability and utilization of ICT in managing examination misconduct. These measures included comprehensive training programs for staff and students, development and implementation of robust ICT policies and guidelines, provision of adequate resources and technical support, and fostering a culture of integrity and ethical behavior within the academic community.
In conclusion, while the availability of ICT infrastructure in public universities in South-East Nigeria is promising, there is a need to prioritize its effective utilization for managing examination misconduct. By addressing the identified challenges and implementing the recommended measures, these institutions can harness the potential of ICT to ensure fair and credible examination processes and maintain the integrity of their academic systems.
