Abstract:
Classroom size plays a significant role in shaping the academic performance of students. This study aims to investigate the impact of classroom size on the academic performance of secondary school students in Enugu North Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria. The study employed a quantitative research approach, using a descriptive survey design.
The sample consisted of secondary school students from various schools within the Enugu North Local Government Area. Data was collected using questionnaires and analyzed using statistical techniques such as mean, standard deviation, and correlation analysis.
The findings revealed that classroom size had a substantial impact on the academic performance of secondary school students. Students in smaller classrooms performed better academically compared to those in larger classrooms. The smaller classroom size provided a conducive learning environment, with students receiving more individual attention from teachers, increased interaction, and improved engagement with the learning materials. On the other hand, larger classroom sizes were associated with challenges such as limited teacher-student interaction, reduced engagement, and difficulties in maintaining discipline.
The results of this study have several implications for educational policymakers, administrators, and teachers. It highlights the importance of reducing classroom sizes to optimize the academic performance of students. Policymakers should consider implementing measures to limit classroom sizes, providing adequate resources for schools to construct additional classrooms and employ more qualified teachers. Teachers should also adopt strategies that promote active learning and engagement, regardless of classroom size.
In conclusion, this study provides empirical evidence of the impact of classroom size on the academic performance of secondary school students in Enugu North Local Government Area. The findings emphasize the need for educational stakeholders to prioritize classroom size reduction as a means to improve students' academic outcomes and overall educational quality.
