Abstract:
This study investigates the perceptions of science teachers regarding the availability and utilization of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) resources in secondary schools within the Jalingo Education Zone of Taraba State, Nigeria. The integration of ICT in education has the potential to enhance teaching and learning processes, particularly in science education. However, the effective utilization of ICT resources depends on their availability and the willingness of teachers to incorporate them into their instructional practices.
The research employs a qualitative approach, utilizing semi-structured interviews and observations to gather data from science teachers in selected secondary schools within the Jalingo Education Zone. The study aims to identify the current state of availability and utilization of ICT resources, as well as the underlying factors influencing science teachers' perceptions and practices.
Preliminary findings indicate that while some secondary schools in the Jalingo Education Zone have ICT resources such as computers, internet connectivity, and multimedia devices, their availability and functionality vary across schools. Additionally, science teachers' perceptions of the importance and usefulness of ICT in teaching and learning science differ considerably. Factors such as limited access to ICT resources, inadequate training on ICT integration, and a lack of technical support were identified as barriers to effective utilization.
Furthermore, the study reveals that science teachers who perceive ICT as valuable and relevant to their teaching are more likely to incorporate ICT resources into their instructional practices. These teachers recognize the potential of ICT in facilitating student engagement, promoting inquiry-based learning, and enhancing the demonstration of complex scientific concepts.
Based on the findings, it is recommended that educational policymakers and school administrators prioritize the provision of functional ICT resources in secondary schools, ensuring equitable access for all science teachers. Additionally, targeted professional development programs should be implemented to enhance science teachers' ICT competencies and pedagogical integration skills. Technical support mechanisms should also be established to address ICT-related challenges faced by teachers.
Overall, this study contributes to the understanding of science teachers' perceptions of ICT resources and their utilization in secondary schools in the Jalingo Education Zone of Taraba State, Nigeria. By addressing the identified challenges, policymakers and educators can work towards creating an enabling environment that maximizes the potential benefits of ICT integration in science education.
