Abstract:
Vocational and technical education (VTE) plays a crucial role in equipping students with the skills necessary for employment and economic growth. This abstract focuses on the needs and challenges faced by vocational and technical education students in skill acquisition at the Federal College of Education (Technical) in Asaba.

The study aims to identify the key needs of VTE students and the challenges they encounter in acquiring skills at the Federal College of Education (Technical). The research methodology involves a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches, including surveys, interviews, and observation techniques. The sample population consists of VTE students enrolled at the institution during the study period.

The findings reveal several important needs of VTE students in skill acquisition. Firstly, students require adequate access to modern and well-equipped workshops, laboratories, and training facilities. Secondly, they need competent and qualified instructors who possess up-to-date knowledge and expertise in their respective fields. Additionally, students require a comprehensive curriculum that aligns with current industry standards and emerging technological advancements.

However, VTE students face various challenges that hinder their skill acquisition process. These challenges include insufficient funding for infrastructure development and maintenance, limited availability of specialized training equipment, inadequate instructional materials, and a shortage of skilled instructors. Moreover, the lack of industry collaboration and internships for students restricts their exposure to real-world work environments, hindering their ability to develop relevant skills.

To address these needs and challenges, several recommendations are proposed. Firstly, the Federal College of Education (Technical) Asaba should prioritize investment in infrastructure development, ensuring well-equipped workshops and laboratories. Secondly, the institution should enhance the professional development of instructors through training programs and collaborations with industry experts. Additionally, curriculum revision should be conducted regularly to ensure alignment with industry demands. Lastly, fostering industry partnerships and providing internship opportunities for students would enhance their practical skills and prepare them for the job market.

In conclusion, the needs and challenges of vocational and technical education students in skill acquisition at the Federal College of Education (Technical) Asaba are multifaceted. Addressing these needs and challenges requires collaborative efforts from the institution, government, industry stakeholders, and policymakers to provide students with an enabling environment and equip them with the necessary skills for successful employment and career advancement.
