Abstract:
This study investigates the perception of senior secondary school students towards the study of poetry in Agbani Education Zone, Enugu State. The aim is to gain insights into how students perceive and engage with poetry as part of their curriculum. The study also explores the potential factors that may influence students' attitudes towards poetry.
The research design employed for this study is a quantitative approach using a survey questionnaire. A sample of senior secondary school students from various schools within Agbani Education Zone was selected through random sampling. The survey questionnaire was designed to gather data on students' perceptions towards poetry, their interest levels, and the factors that impact their engagement with this literary genre.
The findings of the study indicate that senior secondary school students in Agbani Education Zone generally have a positive perception towards the study of poetry. The majority of students expressed a moderate level of interest in poetry, with a significant proportion indicating that they find it enjoyable and relevant to their lives. However, there were also some students who expressed a lack of interest or difficulty in understanding and appreciating poetry.
The study identified several factors that influence students' perception towards poetry. These factors include teaching methods, curriculum content, personal preferences, and the perceived relevance of poetry to their future aspirations. Students expressed a preference for interactive and creative teaching methods that encourage active participation and exploration of poetic elements.
Based on the findings, it is recommended that educators and curriculum developers in Agbani Education Zone consider incorporating innovative teaching strategies to enhance students' engagement with poetry. This could involve integrating multimedia resources, experiential learning activities, and real-world connections to make poetry more relatable and accessible to students. Additionally, the curriculum should be designed to expose students to a diverse range of poetic styles and themes to cater to different interests and promote a deeper understanding and appreciation of poetry.
Further research is suggested to explore the specific teaching strategies and interventions that can effectively enhance students' perception and learning outcomes in poetry. Additionally, investigating the role of cultural and socio-economic factors on students' perception towards poetry would provide a comprehensive understanding of the subject.
