ANALYSIS OF THE PERCEIVED MENTAL HEALTH IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON ADOLESCENTS IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN AWKA SOUTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA IN ANAMBRA STATE
Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about significant disruptions to various aspects of daily life, including education and mental well-being. This study aims to analyze the perceived mental health impact of COVID-19 on adolescents attending secondary schools in Awka South Local Government Area (LGA) in Anambra State, Nigeria.
The research employed a mixed-methods approach to gather data from a representative sample of secondary school students in Awka South LGA. Quantitative data was collected through a structured questionnaire, while qualitative data was obtained through focus group discussions and interviews. The study assessed the students' perception of the mental health impact of COVID-19, including changes in anxiety levels, depression, stress, and overall well-being.
Preliminary findings indicate that COVID-19 has had a substantial perceived mental health impact on adolescents in the study population. The prolonged closure of schools, disruption of social interactions, and uncertainty surrounding the pandemic have contributed to increased anxiety and stress levels among students. The lack of access to mental health support services and resources has further exacerbated the situation.
Additionally, the study explored coping mechanisms employed by adolescents to manage their mental health during the pandemic. Findings revealed that some students engaged in physical exercise, maintained social connections through virtual means, and sought support from family and friends. However, a significant number of students reported difficulties in coping with the mental health challenges posed by the pandemic.
The results of this study have important implications for policymakers, educators, and mental health professionals. It highlights the urgent need for targeted interventions and support systems to address the mental health needs of adolescents in Awka South LGA. Efforts should be made to provide accessible and culturally appropriate mental health services within the school setting, as well as enhance awareness and education surrounding mental health issues among students, parents, and teachers.
