EFFECTIVENESS OF DEMONSTRATION TEACHING METHOD ON STUDENTS` ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN MATHEMATICS IN RIVERS STATE NIGERIA

Abstract:
This study investigates the effectiveness of the demonstration teaching method on students' academic achievement in mathematics in Rivers State, Nigeria. Mathematics education plays a vital role in developing critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and logical reasoning abilities among students. However, students often face challenges in understanding mathematical concepts due to the abstract nature of the subject.

The demonstration teaching method is an instructional approach that emphasizes the use of visual aids, manipulatives, and real-life examples to enhance students' understanding and engagement. This study aims to assess whether the implementation of the demonstration teaching method positively impacts students' academic achievement in mathematics.

A mixed-methods research design was employed, combining quantitative data from achievement tests and qualitative data from interviews and observations. The participants of the study included a sample of secondary school students from Rivers State, Nigeria.

The findings of this study revealed that the demonstration teaching method significantly improved students' academic achievement in mathematics. The visual aids and real-life examples used during the demonstrations helped students grasp abstract mathematical concepts more effectively. Moreover, the interactive nature of the demonstration method enhanced student engagement and participation in the learning process.

The qualitative data highlighted students' positive perceptions of the demonstration teaching method, indicating that it made mathematics more enjoyable and understandable. Students appreciated the hands-on activities and the opportunity to actively participate in the learning process.

Based on the study's results, it is recommended that educators in Rivers State, Nigeria, incorporate the demonstration teaching method into their mathematics instruction. This approach can be used to complement traditional teaching methods and enhance students' academic achievement in mathematics. Furthermore, teacher training programs should emphasize the importance of utilizing innovative instructional strategies to promote effective learning outcomes.

In conclusion, the demonstration teaching method proved to be an effective approach for improving students' academic achievement in mathematics in Rivers State, Nigeria. By incorporating visual aids, manipulatives, and real-life examples, this method enhanced students' understanding, engagement, and overall learning experience in mathematics.
