Abstract:
This paper examines the roles of Christian Religious Education (CRE) in promoting human rights within the context of Ebonyi State College of Education, Ikwo, Ebonyi State. Human rights are fundamental entitlements that every individual possesses by virtue of their humanity, and their promotion and protection are crucial for the establishment of a just and equitable society. CRE, as an integral part of education, has the potential to contribute significantly to the promotion and understanding of human rights principles.
The study employs a qualitative research design, utilizing interviews, observations, and document analysis as data collection methods. The primary objective is to explore the specific ways in which CRE can foster human rights awareness, understanding, and respect among the students and staff of Ebonyi State College of Education. It also investigates the curriculum, teaching methods, and extracurricular activities within the context of CRE that contribute to the promotion of human rights.
The findings of the study reveal that CRE plays a vital role in promoting human rights in Ebonyi State College of Education. The curriculum incorporates teachings on human dignity, equality, social justice, and respect for diversity, which are central to human rights principles.
