PRINCIPALS’ PROMOTION STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVING TEACHERS’ JOB PERFORMANCE IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ANAMBRA STATE
Abstract:
This abstract provides a concise overview of a study focusing on principals' promotion strategies aimed at improving teachers' job performance in secondary schools in Anambra State. The study explores the role of principals in enhancing teacher effectiveness and the strategies employed to promote and support teachers in their professional growth.
The research adopts a qualitative approach, utilizing interviews and observations to gather data from principals, teachers, and other relevant stakeholders in the educational system. A purposive sampling technique is employed to select participants, ensuring a diverse representation of secondary schools within Anambra State.
The findings reveal that principals play a vital role in shaping teachers' job performance through the implementation of effective promotion strategies. These strategies encompass various dimensions, including professional development opportunities, collaborative learning environments, instructional support, performance appraisal, and recognition programs. Principals emphasize the importance of continuous training and workshops to enhance teachers' subject knowledge, pedagogical skills, and classroom management techniques.
Furthermore, the study highlights the significance of fostering a positive school culture and a supportive working environment. Principals employ motivational techniques, encouraging open communication, fostering teamwork, and recognizing teachers' accomplishments. Such approaches cultivate a sense of belonging, boost morale, and foster a shared commitment to improving job performance.
The research also identifies challenges faced by principals in implementing promotion strategies, such as limited financial resources, bureaucratic processes, and resistance to change. However, innovative solutions, such as seeking external partnerships and leveraging technology for professional development, are suggested to overcome these obstacles.
The outcomes of this study have implications for educational policymakers, school administrators, and teachers. They emphasize the importance of principals' proactive role in promoting teachers' job performance and suggest practical strategies that can be implemented in Anambra State and potentially adapted to other educational contexts.
