PEDAGOGICAL ORIENTATION COMPETENCY NEEDS OF OFFICE TECHNOLOGY AND MANAGEMENT LECTURERS FOR THEIR JOB EFFECTIVENESS IN POLYTECHNICS IN SOUTH EAST NIGERIAT
Abstract:
The effective delivery of education in polytechnics relies heavily on the pedagogical competence of lecturers. This study investigates the pedagogical orientation competency needs of Office Technology and Management (OTM) lecturers in South East Nigeria to enhance their job effectiveness.
The aim of this research is to identify the specific pedagogical competencies required by OTM lecturers and to explore the challenges they face in meeting these needs. A mixed-methods approach combining qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis was employed. The study involved OTM lecturers from various polytechnics in the South East region of Nigeria.
Data was collected through interviews, questionnaires, and classroom observations. The qualitative data was analyzed using thematic analysis, while the quantitative data was subjected to descriptive statistics. The findings revealed that OTM lecturers identified several pedagogical competency needs, including innovative teaching methods, student-centered approaches, and ICT integration in teaching and learning.
Additionally, the study identified challenges faced by OTM lecturers in meeting these competency needs, such as limited access to professional development opportunities, inadequate instructional resources, and a lack of institutional support. The findings underscore the importance of addressing these challenges to enhance the job effectiveness of OTM lecturers.
Based on the study findings, recommendations are provided to improve the pedagogical orientation competency of OTM lecturers. These include the development of comprehensive professional development programs tailored to the specific needs of OTM lecturers, provision of adequate instructional resources, and fostering a supportive institutional environment that promotes continuous learning and innovation.
This research contributes to the existing body of knowledge by shedding light on the pedagogical orientation competency needs of OTM lecturers in polytechnics in South East Nigeria. The findings can inform policy development and interventions aimed at enhancing the quality of education in polytechnics and improving the overall job effectiveness of OTM lecturers.
