PERCEIVED EFFECTIVENESS OF ZAMFARA COMPREHENSIVE AGRICULTURAL REVOLUTION PROGRAMME (ZACAREP) IN ACHIEVING FOOD SECURITY IN ZAMFARA STATE
Abstract:
The Zamfara Comprehensive Agricultural Revolution Programme (ZACAREP) was implemented in Zamfara State with the aim of improving food security and agricultural productivity. This study investigates the perceived effectiveness of ZACAREP in achieving food security in Zamfara State.
The research utilizes a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. A survey questionnaire was administered to a sample of farmers, agricultural extension workers, and beneficiaries of ZACAREP interventions, while in-depth interviews were conducted with key stakeholders involved in the implementation of the program.
Preliminary findings indicate that ZACAREP has positively impacted agricultural practices and food security in Zamfara State. The program has introduced modern farming techniques, provided improved seeds, fertilizers, and agricultural machinery to farmers, and facilitated access to credit and markets. The respondents reported increased crop yields, improved income generation, and enhanced livelihoods as a result of their participation in ZACAREP.
However, challenges were also identified. Some farmers expressed concerns about the sustainability of the program and the availability of inputs in subsequent farming seasons. Issues related to infrastructure, such as inadequate irrigation facilities and poor road networks, were also raised as hindering the full potential of ZACAREP.
The study concludes that ZACAREP has made significant strides in enhancing food security in Zamfara State. The program has improved agricultural practices and livelihoods, leading to increased food production and income generation. To ensure the long-term success and sustainability of ZACAREP, it is recommended that the government address infrastructure challenges, establish mechanisms for continuous input supply, and provide comprehensive training and extension services to farmers.
