ARABIC STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION OF THE ROLES OF ARABIC EDUCATION IN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN KWARA STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract:
This study examines the perception of Arabic students regarding the roles of Arabic education in sustainable development in Kwara State, Nigeria. Arabic education plays a significant role in preserving cultural heritage, fostering social cohesion, and contributing to sustainable development in various societies. However, there is limited research on the specific perspectives of Arabic students in Nigeria regarding the contributions of Arabic education to sustainable development.
The study employed a qualitative research design, utilizing interviews and focus group discussions to gather data from Arabic students in selected educational institutions in Kwara State. A purposive sampling technique was used to select participants who were actively engaged in Arabic education. Data analysis involved thematic analysis, allowing for the identification of key themes and patterns in students' perceptions.
Preliminary findings indicate that Arabic students in Kwara State perceive Arabic education as a crucial component in sustainable development. Participants highlighted several roles of Arabic education, including the preservation of cultural identity, promotion of religious values, and enhancement of linguistic skills. Moreover, students recognized Arabic education as a means to empower individuals, foster community development, and contribute to the overall sustainable development goals of the state.
However, some challenges were identified, such as limited resources, inadequate infrastructure, and a perceived lack of recognition of Arabic education in the broader educational system. These challenges, according to the students, hinder the full realization of Arabic education's potential in sustainable development.
The study's findings have significant implications for policymakers, educators, and stakeholders involved in Arabic education in Kwara State, Nigeria. It underscores the importance of integrating Arabic education into the sustainable development agenda and addressing the identified challenges to maximize its contributions effectively. Furthermore, the study provides insights into the perspectives of Arabic students, highlighting their aspirations and expectations regarding Arabic education and its impact on sustainable development.
Further research is recommended to explore the perspectives of other stakeholders, such as educators, policy implementers, and community members, to gain a comprehensive understanding of the roles of Arabic education in sustainable development in Kwara State, Nigeria. Additionally, quantitative studies can provide statistical validation of the findings and offer a broader perspective on the topic.
