Assessing Determinants of Lecturers’ Utilization and Attitude Towards Open Educational Resources in Universities of North-East, Nigeria

Abstract:
Open Educational Resources (OER) have gained increasing attention as a means to enhance access, quality, and affordability of education worldwide. This study aims to assess the determinants of lecturers' utilization and attitude towards Open Educational Resources (OER) in universities located in the North-East region of Nigeria. The North-East region faces unique challenges, including limited access to educational resources and infrastructure, which necessitate exploring alternative avenues for knowledge dissemination.

The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing lecturers' utilization and attitude towards OER. A sample of lecturers from multiple universities in the North-East region will be selected using stratified random sampling. Questionnaires will be administered to collect quantitative data on lecturers' demographic information, technological proficiency, awareness and knowledge of OER, perceived benefits and barriers, and actual utilization of OER in teaching.

Additionally, semi-structured interviews will be conducted to explore lecturers' perspectives in-depth, allowing for a richer understanding of the factors influencing their attitudes and behaviors towards OER. The qualitative interviews will focus on themes such as pedagogical beliefs, institutional support, copyright concerns, and the perceived impact of OER on teaching effectiveness and student learning outcomes.

Data analysis will involve both descriptive statistics and inferential techniques, including regression analysis, to identify significant determinants of lecturers' OER utilization and attitude. Qualitative data will be analyzed thematically to extract key insights and patterns.

The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the existing literature on OER adoption and implementation in higher education, particularly in the context of North-East Nigeria. The study's results will inform policymakers, university administrators, and educational stakeholders about the challenges and opportunities associated with OER integration. Furthermore, the study's outcomes may guide the development of targeted interventions and support mechanisms to promote the effective use of OER among lecturers, ultimately improving the quality and accessibility of education in the region.
