ASSESSMENT OF VOCATIONAL SKILLS DEVELOPMENT AND SMALL SCALE ENTERPRISES PROGRAMMES OF NATIONAL DIRECTORATE OF EMPLOYMENT FOR SELF-RELIANCE AMONG YOUTHS IN NORTH-EAST, NIGERIA

Abstract:
This study aims to assess the effectiveness of the vocational skills development and small-scale enterprises programmes implemented by the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) for fostering self-reliance among youths in the North-East region of Nigeria.

The North-East region has been plagued by various socio-economic challenges, including high unemployment rates and limited opportunities for sustainable livelihoods. In response, the NDE has introduced vocational skills development and small-scale enterprises programmes to enhance the employability and entrepreneurial capacities of young individuals in the region.

The research methodology employed in this study comprises a mixed-methods approach, incorporating quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. The sample population will consist of youths who have participated in the NDE programmes, as well as key stakeholders such as NDE staff, trainers, and beneficiaries of the programmes.

Quantitative data will be collected through structured questionnaires to evaluate the impact of the vocational skills development training and small-scale enterprises programmes on participants' employment prospects, income generation, and overall self-reliance. The qualitative interviews will provide an in-depth understanding of the participants' experiences, challenges, and perceptions regarding the effectiveness of the NDE programmes.

The study's findings will contribute to the existing body of knowledge on vocational skills development and small-scale enterprises programmes in Nigeria, particularly in the North-East region. The results will help identify the strengths, weaknesses, and potential areas for improvement of the NDE programmes, ultimately guiding policy recommendations to enhance their effectiveness and impact.

It is expected that this research will provide valuable insights into the role of vocational skills development and small-scale enterprises programmes in promoting self-reliance among youths in the North-East region of Nigeria. The findings will be beneficial to policymakers, development practitioners, and other stakeholders involved in designing and implementing similar initiatives to address youth unemployment and foster sustainable economic growth in the region.
