SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS IN MAKING A CASE FOR THE RECOGNITION OF INDIGENOUS LANGUAGES IN NIGERIA
Abstract:
This abstract presents a compelling case for the recognition and preservation of indigenous languages in Nigeria within the context of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Indigenous languages play a crucial role in promoting cultural diversity, fostering social cohesion, and advancing sustainable development. However, in Nigeria, these languages face numerous challenges and are at risk of extinction. This paper argues that the recognition and revitalization of indigenous languages align with several SDGs, including Goal 4 (Quality Education), Goal 10 (Reduced Inequalities), Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and Goal 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions).
The first section of the paper highlights the rich linguistic diversity in Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of indigenous languages as carriers of cultural heritage and knowledge systems. It explores the current status of indigenous languages, showcasing the decline in language proficiency and the dominance of major languages like English. This section also discusses the consequences of neglecting indigenous languages, such as cultural erosion, loss of identity, and weakened intergenerational ties.
The subsequent section examines the relationship between indigenous languages and the SDGs. It elucidates how the recognition and preservation of indigenous languages contribute to achieving Goal 4 by promoting inclusive and equitable education. Indigenous languages serve as mediums of instruction that enhance learning outcomes, foster cultural pride, and facilitate the transmission of indigenous knowledge. Moreover, recognizing indigenous languages aligns with Goal 10 by reducing inequalities and promoting social inclusion, ensuring that marginalized populations, particularly indigenous communities, are not left behind in development processes.
Furthermore, this paper argues that recognizing and revitalizing indigenous languages are essential for achieving Goal 11. Indigenous languages contribute to the development of sustainable cities and communities by preserving traditional ecological knowledge, promoting sustainable practices, and enhancing community resilience. Finally, the paper emphasizes the role of indigenous languages in achieving Goal 16, as language rights are integral to fostering participatory governance, empowering marginalized groups, and ensuring access to justice.
The conclusion highlights the urgent need for Nigeria to prioritize the recognition and preservation of indigenous languages as part of its commitment to the SDGs. It emphasizes the importance of formulating language policies that promote multilingualism, provide resources for language education and preservation, and foster cultural diversity. By recognizing and supporting indigenous languages, Nigeria can harness their potential to promote sustainable development, social cohesion, and cultural heritage preservation, thus contributing to the overall achievement of the SDGs.
