TEACHERS’ USE OF CREATIVITY IN TEACHING VISUAL ART IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL IN ILORIN WEST LGA, KWARA STATE

Abstract:
This study examines the use of creativity by teachers in teaching visual art in senior secondary schools within Ilorin West Local Government Area (LGA) of Kwara State. The research aims to explore the extent to which teachers incorporate creative teaching strategies and techniques in the visual art curriculum, as well as identify the factors that influence their use of creativity in the classroom.

A mixed-methods research design was employed, combining both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The sample consisted of visual art teachers from selected senior secondary schools in Ilorin West LGA. Data was collected through questionnaires, classroom observations, and interviews. The quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and presented in the form of tables and graphs, while the qualitative data was thematically analyzed to identify patterns and themes.

The findings of the study revealed that while teachers in senior secondary schools in Ilorin West LGA recognized the importance of creativity in teaching visual art, its integration into classroom practices was minimal. The study identified several factors that hindered teachers' use of creativity, including a lack of training and professional development opportunities, limited access to instructional materials and resources, and a heavy emphasis on exam-oriented teaching.

Furthermore, the study highlighted the need for policy interventions and support from educational authorities to promote and facilitate the use of creativity in teaching visual art. Recommendations include the provision of continuous professional development programs for teachers, the establishment of well-equipped art studios, and the inclusion of creativity-centered approaches in the curriculum.

The implications of this study suggest that fostering creativity in teaching visual art can enhance students' engagement, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and overall artistic development. By addressing the identified challenges and promoting creative teaching practices, educators can create a more stimulating and enriching learning environment for students in senior secondary schools in Ilorin West LGA.
