Abstract:
This abstract provides a summary of a study that explores the perceived impact of vocational skills acquisition on the reformation and reduction of recidivism among ex-convicts of the Gombe Central Correctional Centre. The study aims to understand how vocational skills training programs implemented in the correctional facility influence the rehabilitation and subsequent reintegration of former inmates into society.

The research employs a qualitative approach, utilizing interviews and focus group discussions with ex-convicts who have participated in vocational skills programs within the Gombe Central Correctional Centre. A purposive sampling technique is used to select participants who have completed vocational training during their incarceration period and have been successfully reintegrated into society.

The findings of the study reveal that vocational skills acquisition plays a crucial role in the reformation and reduction of recidivism among ex-convicts. Participants reported that vocational training programs enabled them to acquire practical skills, knowledge, and work experience that enhanced their employability prospects upon release. The newfound skills provided them with a sense of purpose, self-worth, and a viable means of earning a living, significantly reducing their inclination to engage in criminal activities again.

Moreover, participants highlighted that vocational training also positively impacted their psychological well-being, instilling a sense of hope, optimism, and self-confidence. They noted that the acquisition of vocational skills helped them develop a positive identity beyond their criminal past, thereby facilitating their social reintegration and reducing the stigma associated with their incarceration.

The study suggests that the successful implementation of vocational skills training programs within correctional facilities can contribute to reducing recidivism rates. Therefore, it recommends the expansion and improvement of vocational training initiatives in Gombe Central Correctional Centre and similar institutions. Additionally, the study emphasizes the need for collaboration between correctional authorities, vocational training providers, and employers to ensure the seamless integration of ex-convicts into the workforce upon their release.

The findings of this study contribute to the existing body of knowledge on the role of vocational skills acquisition in criminal justice reform efforts. They provide valuable insights for policymakers, correctional authorities, and practitioners involved in designing and implementing rehabilitation programs for ex-convicts. Ultimately, the study underscores the importance of equipping individuals with vocational skills as a means to promote their reformation, reduce recidivism, and foster a more inclusive and productive society.
