PERCEPTION OF UNDERGRATUATES ON THE PSYCHOLOGICAL, PHYSIOLOGICAL AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPACTS OF DRUG ABUSE ON STUDENTS: IMPLICATION FOR COUNSELLING
Abstract:
Drug abuse among students has become a growing concern worldwide due to its detrimental effects on psychological, physiological, and socio-economic aspects of their lives. This study examines the perception of undergraduates regarding the impacts of drug abuse and the implications for counseling interventions.
The research employs a qualitative approach, utilizing interviews and focus group discussions to gather data from undergraduate students. A purposive sampling technique is implemented to select participants from a diverse range of academic disciplines and backgrounds. Thematic analysis is used to analyze the collected data and identify common themes and patterns related to the perception of the impacts of drug abuse.
Preliminary findings reveal that undergraduates recognize the multifaceted impacts of drug abuse on students. Psychologically, drug abuse leads to increased risk of mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, and addiction. Physiologically, it results in deteriorating physical health, impaired cognitive function, and decreased academic performance. Socio-economically, drug abuse contributes to financial instability, strained relationships, and decreased employability prospects.
The implications for counseling services are significant. First, there is a need for awareness campaigns and preventive education programs to enhance students' understanding of the risks associated with drug abuse. Additionally, counseling services should focus on early detection and intervention, providing accessible and confidential support systems for students struggling with drug abuse. Moreover, counseling interventions should address the underlying psychological issues and provide strategies for coping, resilience, and relapse prevention.
In conclusion, this study sheds light on the perception of undergraduates regarding the psychological, physiological, and socio-economic impacts of drug abuse on students. The findings highlight the importance of counseling services in implementing preventive measures, early intervention, and holistic support for affected students. By addressing the complex interplay of factors associated with drug abuse, counselors can contribute to the overall well-being and academic success of students.
