FACTOR ANALYSIS OF INHIBITORS TO UPTAKE OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING AMONG PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS IN THE UNIVERSITY
Abstract:
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has become an integral part of modern education, offering numerous opportunities for enhancing teaching and learning experiences. However, the effective integration of ICT into educational practices continues to face challenges, particularly among pre-service teachers. This study aims to identify and analyze the inhibitors that hinder the uptake of ICT for teaching and learning among pre-service teachers in the university context.
The research employed a quantitative approach, utilizing factor analysis to explore the underlying factors that inhibit pre-service teachers' adoption of ICT in their educational practices. A structured questionnaire was administered to a sample of pre-service teachers enrolled in a university teacher education program. The questionnaire consisted of items designed to measure various potential inhibitors, including technological barriers, lack of training and support, pedagogical concerns, and attitudinal factors.
The collected data were subjected to exploratory factor analysis to identify the underlying factors contributing to the inhibitors. The analysis revealed a set of distinct factors, including technological challenges, insufficient training and support, concerns about pedagogical effectiveness, and personal attitudes towards ICT integration. These factors provided valuable insights into the key barriers that pre-service teachers face when adopting ICT for teaching and learning.
The findings of the study have important implications for teacher education programs and educational policymakers. Addressing the identified inhibitors can help enhance the integration of ICT into pre-service teacher training, ultimately preparing teachers to effectively use technology in their future classrooms. Providing comprehensive and targeted training programs, improving technological infrastructure, and fostering positive attitudes towards ICT can contribute to overcoming these barriers.
This research contributes to the existing literature by offering a comprehensive analysis of inhibitors to the uptake of ICT among pre-service teachers in the university context. The findings provide valuable guidance for educational institutions and policymakers to develop strategies and interventions that promote the effective integration of ICT in teacher education programs. By overcoming these inhibitors, the potential of ICT to transform teaching and learning experiences can be fully realized in the future classrooms.
