IMPACT OF PRINCIPALS’ LEADERSHIP STYLES ON TRUANCY AMONG STUDENTS OF PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ZAMFARA STATE METROPOLIS, NIGERIA
Abstract:
Truancy is a significant challenge affecting the educational system in Nigeria, and it has detrimental effects on students' academic performance and overall development. The role of school principals in addressing truancy cannot be overstated, as their leadership styles can influence students' attendance and engagement in school. This study aims to examine the impact of principals' leadership styles on truancy among students in public secondary schools located in Zamfara State Metropolis, Nigeria.
The study will employ a quantitative research design, utilizing survey questionnaires as the primary data collection tool. A sample size of students from selected public secondary schools in Zamfara State Metropolis will be chosen using a stratified random sampling technique. The questionnaires will assess students' perceptions of their principals' leadership styles and their own truancy behaviors.
The research will focus on four leadership styles: transformational, transactional, laissez-faire, and authoritarian. The impact of these leadership styles on truancy will be analyzed using statistical techniques such as regression analysis and correlation analysis. The study will also consider the influence of demographic factors such as gender, age, and socioeconomic background on truancy.
The findings of this study will contribute to the existing body of knowledge on the relationship between principals' leadership styles and truancy in Nigerian secondary schools. The results will provide valuable insights for policymakers, school administrators, and educators in developing effective strategies to reduce truancy rates. By understanding the leadership styles that positively influence student attendance and engagement, educational stakeholders can implement evidence-based interventions to enhance school climate and promote a culture of attendance and academic success.
