INFLUENCE OF RETENTION AND COMPLETION ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS OF PLATEAU STATE

Abstract:
This research study investigates the influence of retention and completion on students' academic achievement in junior secondary schools of Plateau State. Retention refers to the practice of promoting students to the next grade level, while completion refers to the successful completion of the entire junior secondary school cycle. The aim of this study is to ascertain whether retention and completion have a significant impact on students' academic performance in Plateau State.

The study adopts a quantitative research approach, utilizing a sample of students from multiple junior secondary schools across Plateau State. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire administered to students, focusing on variables such as retention status, completion status, and academic achievement. Additionally, school records and performance data will be obtained to complement the self-reported data.

The data collected will be analyzed using appropriate statistical methods, including descriptive statistics and inferential analyses such as regression analysis and correlation analysis. The findings will be presented in the form of tables, charts, and graphs to enhance clarity and visualization.

The expected results of this study will provide valuable insights into the relationship between retention, completion, and students' academic achievement in junior secondary schools. The findings may have implications for educational policymakers, school administrators, teachers, and parents, as they seek to enhance the academic performance of students in Plateau State.

It is anticipated that the research findings will contribute to the existing body of knowledge on educational practices and inform educational policies aimed at improving students' academic achievement in junior secondary schools. The study's limitations include potential sample bias and the reliance on self-reported data, which may introduce response biases.
