DESIRE FOR INDEPENDENCE AND FINANCIAL STATUS AS DETERMINANTS OF ENTREPRENEURIAL INTENTION AMONG NATIONAL DIPLOMA STUDENTS IN TAXATION IN NORTH-EASTERN NIGERIA

Abstract:
Entrepreneurship plays a vital role in economic development, and understanding the factors influencing entrepreneurial intention among students is crucial for fostering a culture of entrepreneurship. This study aims to investigate the relationship between the desire for independence, financial status, and entrepreneurial intention among National Diploma (ND) students in taxation in North-Eastern Nigeria.

The research adopts a quantitative approach, employing a survey questionnaire as the primary data collection tool. A sample of ND students in taxation from various educational institutions in the North-Eastern region of Nigeria was selected using a multi-stage sampling technique. The questionnaire included items related to desire for independence, financial status, and entrepreneurial intention. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and regression analysis.

Preliminary findings indicate that there is a significant positive correlation between the desire for independence and entrepreneurial intention among ND students in taxation. Students who possess a strong desire for independence are more likely to exhibit a higher intention to become entrepreneurs. Additionally, financial status was found to be positively related to entrepreneurial intention, suggesting that students with better financial resources are more inclined towards starting their own businesses.

The regression analysis further confirms the relationship between the desire for independence, financial status, and entrepreneurial intention. Both variables were found to be significant predictors of entrepreneurial intention among ND students in taxation, with the desire for independence having a stronger influence compared to financial status.

The findings of this study have important implications for educational institutions and policymakers. To foster entrepreneurial mindset and intentions among ND students in taxation, it is crucial to provide opportunities for developing independence and autonomy. Additionally, efforts should be made to enhance financial literacy and provide access to resources and funding opportunities for aspiring student entrepreneurs.

However, this study has certain limitations, including the focus on a specific geographic region and the use of self-reported data, which may introduce response bias. Future research should consider a larger and more diverse sample to enhance generalizability and employ longitudinal designs to better understand the causal relationships between these variables.
