Determining the Causes of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPS) and Counselling for Social and Psychological Adjustment in Plateau State, Nigeria

Abstract:
The phenomenon of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) has become a critical issue in Plateau State, Nigeria, due to ongoing conflicts and other destabilizing factors. This abstract presents a comprehensive overview of a study aimed at determining the causes of IDPs in Plateau State and exploring the role of counseling in promoting their social and psychological adjustment.

The study utilizes a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather data from a representative sample of IDPs in Plateau State. The causes of displacement are examined through a systematic analysis of survey responses, focusing on factors such as ethno-religious conflicts, land disputes, and environmental degradation.

Furthermore, the study explores the role of counseling in facilitating the social and psychological adjustment of IDPs. It investigates the effectiveness of counseling interventions in addressing the challenges faced by IDPs, including trauma, loss, and social dislocation. Qualitative interviews are conducted with IDPs who have received counseling services, as well as with counselors and humanitarian workers involved in providing support.

Preliminary findings reveal that the causes of IDPs in Plateau State are multifaceted, with ethno-religious conflicts emerging as a significant factor. Land disputes and environmental degradation also contribute to the displacement. The study highlights the urgent need for conflict resolution mechanisms, land reform policies, and environmental conservation initiatives to mitigate the causes of displacement.

Furthermore, counseling is found to play a crucial role in supporting the social and psychological adjustment of IDPs. It provides a safe space for individuals to process their trauma, grief, and loss, and helps in rebuilding social networks and fostering resilience. The study emphasizes the importance of culturally sensitive and context-specific counseling approaches to accommodate the unique needs and experiences of IDPs in Plateau State.

Based on the findings, the study recommends integrated interventions that combine conflict resolution, land reform, environmental conservation efforts, and counseling services. These recommendations aim to address the root causes of displacement while promoting the social and psychological well-being of IDPs in Plateau State.
