SKILLS ACQUISITION AS CORRELATE TO DECENT WORK IN DIGITAL ERA AMONG BUSINESS EDUCATION STUDENTS IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN AKWA IBOM STATE

Abstract:
The digital era has brought about significant changes in the nature of work, requiring individuals to possess a diverse set of skills to thrive in the modern job market. This study aims to explore the relationship between skills acquisition and decent work among Business Education students in tertiary institutions in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.

The research adopted a quantitative approach, employing a survey questionnaire to collect data from a sample of Business Education students in selected tertiary institutions within Akwa Ibom State. The questionnaire consisted of items related to skills acquisition, employment outcomes, and the digital era’s impact on the job market. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics and correlation analysis.

Findings from the study revealed a positive correlation between skills acquisition and the attainment of decent work among Business Education students in the digital era. The results indicated that students who acquired a wider range of skills, including digital literacy, critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills, were more likely to secure employment that provided decent working conditions, fair wages, and career advancement opportunities.

Furthermore, the study highlighted the significance of digital skills in the current job market. The digital era has led to increased demand for individuals who can effectively leverage technology and adapt to the rapidly changing digital landscape. Business Education students who acquired digital skills were found to be better equipped to meet the demands of the digital era, thus increasing their chances of securing decent work.

Based on the findings, it is recommended that tertiary institutions in Akwa Ibom State integrate skill development programs into the curriculum of Business Education courses. These programs should focus on equipping students with digital skills and other essential competencies that are relevant to the demands of the digital era. Additionally, collaboration between academic institutions, industry stakeholders, and government agencies is crucial to ensure the alignment of educational programs with the needs of the labor market.

In conclusion, this study emphasizes the importance of skills acquisition, particularly digital skills, in securing decent work opportunities for Business Education students in the digital era. By equipping students with a diverse skill set, tertiary institutions can contribute to enhancing employability and preparing individuals for the challenges and opportunities presented by the evolving world of work.
