EFFECT OF HEURISTIC METHOD ON STUDENTS’ PERFORMANCE IN SHORTHAND IN COLLEGES OF EDUCATION IN KANO STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract:
This study investigates the effect of the heuristic method on students’ performance in shorthand in colleges of education in Kano State, Nigeria. Shorthand is an important skill for students pursuing careers in secretarial studies and related fields. However, there is limited research on the application of innovative teaching methods, such as the heuristic method, in shorthand instruction.
The study adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques. A sample of students from colleges of education in Kano State is selected using a purposive sampling technique. The experimental group is taught shorthand using the heuristic method, while the control group receives traditional instruction.
Quantitative data is collected through pre- and post-tests to measure students’ performance in shorthand. The tests include dictation exercises to assess students’ writing speed, accuracy, and comprehension. Additionally, qualitative data is obtained through interviews and observations to gain insights into students’ perceptions and experiences with the heuristic method.
The findings of the study will contribute to the existing literature on shorthand instruction by exploring the effectiveness of the heuristic method in enhancing students’ performance. It is expected that students exposed to the heuristic method will demonstrate improved writing speed, accuracy, and comprehension compared to those receiving traditional instruction.
The study’s implications are significant for colleges of education in Kano State and other educational institutions in Nigeria. If the heuristic method proves to be effective, it can inform curriculum development and teaching practices in shorthand instruction. By incorporating innovative teaching methods, educators can enhance students’ engagement, motivation, and learning outcomes in shorthand.
In conclusion, this research aims to evaluate the impact of the heuristic method on students’ performance in shorthand in colleges of education in Kano State, Nigeria. The study’s findings will provide valuable insights into the potential benefits of the heuristic method in shorthand instruction, contributing to the improvement of educational practices and student outcomes in the field of secretarial studies.
